As many of you know, VPN client software can be challenging at times, to say the least. This article will assist you with configuring your Cisco VPN client software located within Mac OSX. The Cisco VPN client is a private network security tool which is typically available on Mac computers from factory default.
**IMPORTANT** Please note that most of the configure for IPsec Mac OSX users actually occurs at the firewall device or security appliance. The parameters within the Cisco VPN client software only need to match what has been configured on the firewall/security appliance.
How do I configure the Cisco VPN client on my Mac?
1. Open System Preferences and select Network.
2. Click + at the bottom of the list to add a new interface. Configure these settings:
- Interface — VPN
- VPN Type — Cisco IPSec
- Service Name — type the name you want to use for this connection
3. Click Create.
The new VPN interface appears in the list of network interfaces.
4. Select the new interface in the list. Edit these settings:
- Server Address — The external IP address of the firewall device
- Account Name — The user name on the firewall/authentication server
- Password — The password for the user on the firewall/authentication server
5. Click Authentication Settings. Set these settings:
- Shared Secret — The tunnel passphrase you set in the firewall device for the IPsec Mobile VPN configuration
- Group Name — The group name you chose in the firewall for the Mobile VPN with IPSec configuration
- Select the Show VPN status in menu bar check box to add the VPN status icon to the OS X menu bar.
- Click Connect to start the VPN tunnel.
You may be prompted to re-enter your password at some point, usually due to timeouts.
